Producing a high quality audiobook is quite an undertaking. There are several steps that home producers are often not aware of. Let’s take a look at the roadmap for producing a professional audiobook:

Pre Production

This is where we review the entire manuscript and figure out the technicality of pronunciations, accents and create character voices. We will communication directly with you (the rights holder) to ensure that we are interpreting your book exactly as you have imagined it.Audiobooks are all about using our voice to tell your story. We want to make sure we get it right.

  • An estimated timeline and production schedule will be delivered to you based on the length of the manuscript.
  • A 15 minute sample will be delivered to you before we start full production for your approval.

Production

This is the most technical phase of the production process. We record all of the raw audio in our custom isolation booth for a very low noise floor. This process can take several days of recording with the voice talent depending on the length of the book. For the most part, we record with the “punch and roll” technique. This technique allows the narrator to pick up where she left off if a mistake was made. We always pre-roll the last three to five seconds of audio so the narrator can pickup on timing and pacing.

Post Production

Post production consists of Editing, Quality Control, Mastering and Encoding the audio properly for delivery. An experienced audiobook producer will spend six hours to complete one hour of finished audio. This is an industry standard, and allows for all of the correct editing and quality control to make sure your audiobook is up to professional standards.

Editing consists of fixing areas where the narrator had made a mistake, removing excessive breaths or mouth noises, and filling in gaps with room tone.

For Quality Control, we are looking at the manuscript as we edit the work to make sure that no words were missed or mispronounced.

Mastering is a technique where we apply dynamics to the entire audiobook to make sure that the narrators voice sounds great, and the overall volumes are consistant and meets standards required by audiobook retailers such as Audible and iTunes.

Encoding is an important step as well. We always encode the output to a very high quality MP3 so the retailers can re-encode to lower quality if they need to. Sometimes audiobook consumers prefer to have a lower quality encoding to save space on the device they are using to listen to your audiobook.
