Podcasting is more than just setting up a yeti microphone and hitting record in audacity. While that is considered “good enough” and very inexpensive to get started, a true high quality podcast takes a considerable amount of effort to be recognized as a quality production and stand up to your competition.

Recording a podcast has several phases. Each of these phases are equally important in the overall outcome of the podcast. The general phases are Pre-Production, Production and Post-Production.

For ways we can help with your podcast scroll down on this page, Visit our Services Page, or Contact Us for more information.

Pre-Production

During this phase you will develop content, work with your guests / co-hosts and setup a time schedule for the broadcast.

You will need to work with your guests to prepare them for the production phase of the podcast. Let them know that this is a production and that you may need to interrupt them during the interview if there is an airplane, dog barking or garbage truck making a bunch of noise in your recording environment. You may also need to tell them to get back on track of the main topic. Don’t be afraid to say, “Cut” and then resume once the garbage truck is gone, or you get back on track. We will touch more on this in “Post-Production”.

Setting up a time schedule for your podcast is very important. There should be at the very least an intro (head), content of the podcast, and a outro (tail). By adding segments into your podcast for ads and announcements, you will greatly increase the perceived value of your content by making it sound more like a “radio show”.

We can help!

  1. By providing canned documentation and guidelines to send to your guests to prepare them, you will look very professional and have the benefit of having a prepared guest show up to your interview.
  2. We have time schedule templates for podcasts and radio shows that we will work one on one with you to customize the time schedule to meet the needs of your podcast.

Production

This is where the technical aspect of recording the podcast comes into play.

Most likely you are not an audio engineer and you are splitting your focus between being a great host for your podcast as well as being the audio engineer. Why not focus on being a great host and get the best interview you possibly can without having to worry about the quality of the recording.

The quality of your gear has a direct correlation on how your podcast will be perceived as a “good” podcast. Much of the time, when a listener hears a bad production of audio they can’t exactly define what it is, and will blame their “dislike” of the podcast on the content, the host, or something else that is easier to define than the audio being distorted, over compressed or inconsistent volume levels.

We can help!

  1. If you are local, and do not want to deal with the technical aspect of recording your podcast AT ALL, we can come to you! We have high quality portable recording capability for up to eight microphones.
  2. Again if you are local to the Sacramento CA area, you can come to our studio and record in a professional environment where an engineer will take care of 100% of the technical details of the recording.
  3. We can consult with you to find the right set of equipment for you to purchase to create a high quality podcast.
  4. We can build a custom recording kit for you that is pre-tested, setup and documented with Standard Operating Procedures and documents that will tell you exactly how to get a high quality recording without the hassle of learning audio engineering. We will ship the kit directly to you with instructions and documents on how to set it up in your studio once it arrives.
  5. Equipment Rental. Tell us how many guests and hosts you will have, what environment you will be in and with an appropriate deposit we will send you the right gear for the job.

Post-Production

I have spoken to many people starting a new podcast that say, “I don’t want to spend time editing the podcast after its recorded.” Big mistake, there really is no getting around post production. If you have done the Production phase correctly, chances are you have at least one edit to make due to barking dogs or the ill famed garbage truck. Unless you are in a professional studio, you are going to have some background noise.

The other main aspect of post production is compiling all of the segments you setup in your time schedule in the Pre-Production phase. Once you have fit everything together, taken out all the garbage trucks and bodily noises, you will then probably need to run some dynamics on the voice channels and then prepare the exports for iTunes, Soundcloud, your website etc.

We can help!

  1. If you would rather not deal with the post production at all, we provide post-production services to you and your podcast. You can send us the raw recorded interview files, heads, tails, ads, music etc (this is all stuff we work out in pre-production) and we will do all the editing and mastering for you. What you will get back is a professionally edited, mixed and mastered podcast that will stand up to your competition.
